Finding A Domain Name
What is domain registration? In order to have a website, you need a domain name. Your domain name is the internet equivalent to a house address. A domain name is unique- once you choose your domain name, no one else can take it. However, there are several variations (called “extensions”) of the same name that are possible, and unless you register them all, someone could conceivably have a domain name very similar to yours, although not identical.
There are literally dozens of domain name extensions used throughout the world. Although the .com extension is the most common throughout the world, other popular extensions in North America are .net (usually chosen if the .com of the name you want has already been taken, .org (usually chosen for non-profit organizations and governments) and .ca for Canadian residents.
Please be advised that internet naming and company naming are two different entities. There are no legal restrictions on domain names, the only restriction is that if anyone else has the name you want, you cannot have it.
